Star Spangled Top

The 4th of July is just right around the corner. These past couple of weeks I've been working on different projects getting ready for  it.

This is a "Sew Simple" project which we all love!

Today I made a fun star top out of a plain navy shirt that Sophia has had in her closet. I cut strips of white and red knit jersey and started to pin the white in a star shape.

Next using a zig-zag stitch I secured it into place.

Then I proceeded to do the same in red.

Finished and ready for July 4th!

Special Thanks

Have I mentioned that my family LOVES Independence Day!  We take a lot of pride in our country and this particular holiday has significant meaning to us.  This is my hottie husband Keith (middle) with his best buddies Skip (right) and Rob (left).

I'm thankful for their many years of service to our country. My husband is now a civilian but as everyone knows "Once a Marine Always a Marine!"

God Bless The USA!

The Frustrating Play Dress

This one was a rough one. I did learn from it but is was so frustrating that there will be no tutorial! LOL The dress has 2 ruffled skirt panels and a fitted bodice top. I also made a matching  rose bow for her hair. All in all it turned out alright. Sophia wore it today for her last day of Vacation Bible School :(  I do have to say that she did get a lot of compliments on how cute she looked. Don't you love the shock in people's face when they ask where you got it and you tell them you made it! That was enough gratification for me to make all the frustration worth while.

She was being silly in most of the pictures.

What a cheese ball!

Independence Day Door Hanging

I look forward to Independence Day every year . It’s my second favorite holiday next to Christmas of course. I’ve been looking for a door hanging but everything I find is country and while I like the country look it’s just not my style. Here is the custom door hanging I made. I love it some much I wanted to share!

What you need:

Cardboard Box
Print out of U S A at 500 font size
Patriotic Ribbon
Moss
Glue Gun
Cardboard Star
String or Floss

Start by cutting out the printed U S A and use them as a template

Trace the letters on to the cardboard and cut out.

Glue and cover the letters with the moss.

Grab the string and cut a piece about 4 in.

Stretch and glue to both side like so. This will keep the letter upright and prevent it from falling forward while hanging.

Paint your star and set aside to dry.

Grab your ribbon and cut a 24 inch strip. Glue and fold 4inchs over creating a loop on both ends.

Make a large bow and glue under loop. Then adhere the star.

Add the U and glue in to place. Then take a 8 inch piece of ribbon and create one more loop.

Slip the S through the bottom loop. Then add the A.

Your done! Hang it and enjoy!

Kids New Bedroom Ideas

So my poor kiddo's have been living with white walls in their bedrooms for far to long. I have got to come up with some fun spaces for them. Sophia really wants an Ariel room. Oy vey! I'm so not one to do Disney characters. We will have to see... maybe I can find a cute mermaid fabric and sway her (wink wink).

Here are some  photo of her old room. We put her right into a big girl room once we found out I was pregnant with #2 so the transition period would  not be such a big deal. I miss this room, I put so much time and effort into it for her.

Sophia is a fun, free spirited little girl so a pink room just would not be for her. I painted the art on the walls, made the tufted headboard and sewed pillows on the bed. It was a fresh space that she could grow with for sure.

For Maxon I'm thinking Rugby (football). Picture a rugby shirt with stripes and a number. If it was up to my husband Keith his room would be all Chicago Bears. No, navy and orange.

Here are a few photo's from his old room. It was vintage Owls.

Cinderella Top

Cinderella eat your heart out! Just kidding. This little top is just one of my recent creations for Sophia. We both fell in love with the fabric at Joann's. Sophia was excited because she thinks it looks  like Cinderella due to the sparkles and light blue color. She is 3 1/2 and her world revolves around everything princess.

I'm excited because I got to sew my first button hole! Yes, all the pretty little details on the top and I'm thrilled about the button hole.

Tutorial to come!

The Crib and the Culprit

Just in case you missed it, here is the post I did for my feature yesterday at Be Different Act Normal:

This project was inspired by my dear son Maxon, who one day decided that his crib tasted good.  So sad seeing as you spend  BIG $$$ on their furniture and then they start teething and chew it up. (Sigh) No one ever warned me of this issue!  :)
Here is my crib and the culprit.

Here is the protective cover that I made and the tutorial. Enjoy!
What you will need:
2 yards of fabric (I used Minky Dot for it softness and look)
Quilting Batting (this adds padding and extra protection for your little one)
2 yards White Cotton fabric (Back side of protector)
White Velcro

Start by measuring the length of side bars and circumference.

Then the length of the front and circumference.

Here is the pattern I came up with.

After your fabric and batting are cut make sure they are layered in the right order before pinning. Here is the correct order. Minky (wrong side facing),  white cotton, and then batting (bottom). The following steps are the same for all three pieces.

Cut your Velcro in to 4" strips. For the sides you will need three and for the front you will need five. Peel each pair of Velcro apart and place on top like so.

You will tuck each piece in the middle of the minky and cotton. Pin in to place. I placed mine starting in the center and then the ends about 1" from the sides.

Note:
Make sure one side of the Velcro is facing up and one side down. If you enlarge the photo you will see I have the soft side up and the rough side down. This ensures that the straps are facing the right direction to work.

Time to sew!

Sew along all four sides leaving a 1/8 seam. Make sure to leave an opening  about 4" so that you can turn your protector right side out.
 Like this:

Trim your corners.

This is what you should have after turning right side out.

Fold, tuck in, and pin opening.

Next sew the opening closed and keep going along the edges crating the finished look.

Almost Done! Time to test your measurements....A perfect fit! Trim off the extra Velcro and enjoy your handy work! Or you can blog about it like I did.

All complete.

Culprit but still the apple of my eye.
